Not Just Music Podcast

In this episode of "Not Just Music," Duan shares the history and origins of the Fula Flute. Since it's an African instrument, it seemed only natural to incorporate it into this month's Black History Month topic. As Duan explains, the Fula Flute is traditionally played by Fula shepherds, who use it to communicate with each other over long distances. Duan demonstrates what the Fula Flute sounds like and shows us how to use it in music production. There are several interesting techniques he shares, such as how to get a "flute choir" effect. This is just part one, so stay tuned to see how the story unfolds.

What's going on? It's your boy Duann Bereno from Not Just Music Podcast. Thank you for joining us another week. Let's go

2
00:00:07,480 --> 00:00:14,140
What's going on? It's your boy Duann Bereno from Not Just Music Podcast and I'm back with another black history moment

3
00:00:14,140 --> 00:00:19,920
Here we go. The first thing I want to talk about is the Fula Flute. The Fula Flute is a

4
00:00:21,760 --> 00:00:23,760
Also known as the Tamban

5
00:00:23,760 --> 00:00:30,440
Likely originated from the Fula people who lived throughout West Africa with large populations in

6
00:00:31,280 --> 00:00:38,120
Guinea and Mali. Their flutes are also used in the traditional music of the Malinque people in

7
00:00:38,600 --> 00:00:40,600
Guinea as well.

8
00:00:41,440 --> 00:00:43,440
One thing I want to talk about

9
00:00:43,440 --> 00:00:45,760
with this flute is a lot of people

10
00:00:46,480 --> 00:00:51,320
if you hear this flute is very very very similar in sound to

11
00:00:51,320 --> 00:00:56,120
you know a basic flute, but it has more of a hollow sound to it in a sense of

12
00:00:56,480 --> 00:00:59,960
but of course, you know we put our own spin on flutes as

13
00:01:01,640 --> 00:01:03,200
musicians and

14
00:01:03,200 --> 00:01:09,240
producers and people who you know create music we've started to kind of stretch how we

15
00:01:09,920 --> 00:01:11,480
want a

16
00:01:11,480 --> 00:01:13,480
flute to sound

17
00:01:13,600 --> 00:01:19,400
so as I said, I'm starting to do things different. So one thing I want to do differently is

18
00:01:19,400 --> 00:01:21,920
start implementing music into

19
00:01:22,920 --> 00:01:26,000
pods now. So the first thing I want to do is play a flute

20
00:01:26,520 --> 00:01:32,280
just to give you a vibe of what I'm going for with the music that

21
00:01:33,280 --> 00:01:36,320
I'm creating here. It's kind of a has a

22
00:01:37,040 --> 00:01:42,600
Afro vibe to it. So, you know, it's I'm basically giving the flute its own

23
00:01:43,560 --> 00:01:45,560
where it's coming from history and

24
00:01:46,280 --> 00:01:48,280
implementing the times like this

25
00:01:48,280 --> 00:01:51,720
implementing the times of now which they've considered Afro

26
00:01:52,360 --> 00:01:58,800
Beats, of course, they call it Afro Beat, but put in a little spin with all of this, you know just to have some fun

27
00:01:58,800 --> 00:02:20,800
Let's listen to the flute

28
00:02:20,800 --> 00:02:41,800
Let's hit it again

29
00:02:41,800 --> 00:02:48,320
And as you can tell with these flutes a lot of this stuff is like really really really rich

30
00:02:48,320 --> 00:02:50,320
sounding, you know, in

31
00:02:52,160 --> 00:02:56,520
Africa you listen to a lot of different music you really hear a lot of flutes

32
00:02:57,760 --> 00:03:00,080
and drums, of course, you know, maybe

33
00:03:00,600 --> 00:03:05,000
Of course a lot of different instrument elements when it comes to percussion there as well

34
00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:07,760
But we'll get into that in a later pod

35
00:03:07,760 --> 00:03:12,800
But again for right now the flute is what I'm speaking on but again has a very rich sound

36
00:03:12,800 --> 00:03:20,040
And it's very it has a very you can be very emotional an emotional sound with it as well

37
00:03:21,200 --> 00:03:25,600
Coming from it. It's very but I say again, it's very rich and sounding

38
00:03:27,640 --> 00:03:31,080
But what I wanted to do is create an element

39
00:03:32,120 --> 00:03:35,480
To go along with the vibe of this flute, right?

40
00:03:35,480 --> 00:03:44,440
So let's come back over here. I actually went as far as to sing all of these

41
00:03:46,400 --> 00:03:48,400
Parts to this

42
00:03:49,920 --> 00:03:51,920
To this song

43
00:03:52,000 --> 00:03:53,720
You know just to give it

44
00:03:53,720 --> 00:04:00,880
Of course, you already heard the flute to give it a vibe of to stay in that flute vibe because actually I created the flute first

45
00:04:00,880 --> 00:04:04,840
So let's play this so you can hear what's going on here

46
00:04:13,680 --> 00:04:15,680
Play it again

47
00:04:15,680 --> 00:04:23,680
I

48
00:04:26,520 --> 00:04:30,480
Sung each one of those each one of those I saw

49
00:04:32,240 --> 00:04:36,280
Um, I have an alto part basically just look at I have an alto part

50
00:04:36,640 --> 00:04:41,800
Three alto parts three sopranos three tenors. I sung each in every one of those

51
00:04:41,800 --> 00:04:47,640
I wanted to give it a very big vibe, but at the same time keep it

52
00:04:49,000 --> 00:04:53,280
Give it that coral vibe that a lot of musicians

53
00:04:54,480 --> 00:05:00,000
Can't implement from a VST, you know, it's hard that you can you it's a lot of good VSTs out of here

54
00:05:00,000 --> 00:05:02,000
It's a lot of good plugins out here

55
00:05:02,080 --> 00:05:07,280
But it's even better when you can do it on your own

56
00:05:07,280 --> 00:05:12,200
It just makes it that more realistic. It gives it that much more feeling

57
00:05:13,680 --> 00:05:19,880
But again, that's what I wanted to implement along with this flute

58
00:05:21,240 --> 00:05:23,500
So to keep these short

59
00:05:24,440 --> 00:05:31,000
The next episode that I do we're gonna go in depth with the beat a little more

60
00:05:31,000 --> 00:05:34,780
But again, we're still focusing around the full of flute

61
00:05:34,780 --> 00:05:36,780
Again, I hope you enjoy

62
00:05:37,780 --> 00:05:41,980
What we're bringing now it's gonna be a little newer a little different

63
00:05:42,380 --> 00:05:46,180
But more music driven because it is not just music podcast

64
00:05:46,180 --> 00:05:52,580
It just took a while to get to it because I wanted to build a rapport and understanding the

65
00:05:53,900 --> 00:05:55,900
That it's a black history

66
00:05:56,700 --> 00:05:57,900
based

67
00:05:57,900 --> 00:05:59,420
podcast that

68
00:05:59,420 --> 00:06:06,780
Once I want it to be something that we can remember and some things that we didn't know and how we implement those things

69
00:06:06,780 --> 00:06:29,780
And how we implement those things into today's time. So again, I'm your boy Duann Barrino, Not Just Music Podcast and I'm out.
